Hessle too hot for Hull in Scratch League final

Hessle 2.5 - 0.5 Hull

Hessle won the 2024 Scratch League title at a rain hit Ganton with a hard fought victory over Hull.

Things were tight in the top match where Hull's Ben Rozenbroek traded blows on the front nine against his brother-in-law Aaron Brettell. Their match looked to be going the distance as Hessle began to get the upper hand in the other two matches.

East Riding teammates George Clark (Hull) and Luke Thornton were pitted together in match 2, with the Hessle youngster going two holes up after a birdie at the 3rd. Further birdies at 8 and 9 took him to 3up at the turn, before George cut the deficit to two after 12. Luke's monster putt at the 13th for birdie proved the key moment and he ran out a 4&2 winner.

In match 3, East Riding Men's Team Captain Andy Lockwood proved the perfect anchor for Hessle having lifted the Matchplay title at Ganton just 12 months ago. He led Hull's Ben Thornham from the off and used his superior knowledge of the course to hold off the Hull man to win 5&4 to get Hessle the two points they needed to lift the trophy for the 5th time in the last 15 years.

At the head of affairs, Aaron and Ben came to the last at all square aware that the match was over. The Hull man knocked his second from just short of the road to 15 feet. Aaron chipped up to 8 feet in three, but when the Rozenbroek birdie putt cruelly horseshoed out of the hole, he graciously conceded Aaron's putt to ensure no one lost a high quality match.

ERUGC President Jonty Hall presented the giant Scratch League shield to the winning team on the terrace at Ganton as the rain finally cleared after a testing wet day on an immaculate course.
