Alfie over the moon with award as boys get together at Ganton

East Riding's under 18s met at a chilly Ganton on 21 January for their first get together of the year. Team Manager Sunil Mukerjea assembled 16 of the Union's best young prospects who were put through their paces by Ganton Head Professional Gary Brown and Assistant Pro Ollie Adamson.

After a busy morning on the range, a short game skills session and a five hole loop on the frozen course, the squad gathered in front of the clubhouse for the presentation of the 2022 Player of the Year Award.

ERUGC President Elect Mike Dawson presented Alfie Slater of Cottingham Parks with the salver for his outstanding performances during last season's YIDU campaign. Alfie's 100% singles record in his five appearances proved decisive to gain enough points to hold off Harry Mukerjea, Luke Thornton and Warren Burns for the award previously won by 2021 u18s captain George Clark.

After the presentation and a spot of lunch, the squad ventured out onto the slightly greener hallowed turf in four fourballs which gave Sunil a look at some potential pairings for the coming season. New Yorkshire Boys Captain Jack Northgraves and white rose regular Luke Thornton will lead out the singles order when available, but ERUGC u18 captain Luke Townhill will be one of many very low handicaps in the side with a flurry of younger, fast improving players making for a strong squad.

The first fixture is at Skidby Lakes on Sunday 14 May when the boys take on York Union.
