The early morning views across Flamborough Head set the tone for the day. The recent change in weather had greened up the fairways beautifully, and the course was presented in excellent condition throughout.
As players made their way back into the clubhouse, the comments were overwhelmingly complimentary — several who hadn’t played the course for a number of years said they would certainly be back before too long. Our thanks go to the green staff, bar and catering staff, and the club’s management for a course and clubhouse service to be proud of.
It was a great turnout, with 81 players taking part. The wind built steadily through the day to a genuine 2-3 club breeze before easing off again later on, and it certainly took its toll on more than a few scorecards. That didn’t stop some excellent golf being played, however — none more so than at the top of the leaderboard.
Beverley’s England Senior International Norton shot an impressive two over par 73 around the spectacular layout buffeted by strong cross winds all day. He looked set to match the par of 71 until a lost ball at the short par 4 16th led to a double bogey. It nearly cost him the title.
No-one got near Richard’s score all day until Hessle’s Andy Woodhead (below) reached the 15th tee in a remarkable bogey free one under. However, three bogies on the spin scuppered Andy’s chances of a third win in the event as he lost out on countback.
Age Category Winners
With Norton’s overall win and Woodhead’s runner-up voucher both taking precedence over the category prizes, the age category honours went as follows:
Nicholas Jones (pictured below) (Beverley & East Riding Golf Club) took the Gross 50-59 category with a 75. In the 60-69 bracket, Alan Wright (Ganstead Park Golf Club) took top slot with a 78 and Barry Peasgood (Hornsea Golf Club) claimed the Gross 70+ prize with an 83.
In the Nett divisions, Joe Martinez (Sutton Park Golf Club) took the 50-59 category on 72, Ian Bottomley (Sutton Park GC) the 60-69 category with an excellent 68, and Wayne Sutton (Hornsea GC) the 70+ category on 73.
Congratulations to all our category winners, and to Richard Norton on a well-earned Championship win. In Richard’s absence due to travelling to his son’s weekend wedding, brother Dave accepted the ER Seniors Championship trophy.
ERUGC officials on the day were Ian Jeffrey (Competition Secretary) and Tom Elder (Union Secretary), supported by ERUGC President, Alan Hutchinson.
