2022 East Riding President John Illingworth (above left) broke free from the shackles of organising the event to take the prestigious Rex Warren Medal played at its ceremonial home Driffield Golf Club.
After a steady start, John’s round took off with a nett birdie at the tough par 3 6th, followed by another three at the next for a four pointer. Three more nett birdies around the turn and a couple to finish sandwiched a little wobble on the back to back par 3s, but his 39 points was plenty good enough to take the prestigious prize amongst those eligible. John was honoured to receive the award and gave a humble acceptance speech.

Many thanks to all at Driffield Golf Club – the course really was in wonderful condition considering the harsh summer. The East Riding Union were delighted that the Club Captain Martin Burniston was able to join them on the day and play so well. He certainly put his playing partners to shame on the greens and finished second on countback.
Martin was delighted to accept a donation of £50 from the East Riding Union for Driffield GC’s junior section from ERUGC President Alan Hutchinson. Many thanks to catering team for the excellent food and hospitality.
The medal was inaugurated in 1986 to celebrate the high office of President of the EGU bestowed upon Rex Warren, President of the East Riding Union in 1974 and the Yorkshire Union 1981. It was first played for in 1987.
This year’s event was made all the more special by the presence of Rex Warren’s son Chris (below right) and grandson Martyn (left), both members at Cleethorpes Golf Club. Chris played 9 holes with 1997 President Edward Clark, whilst Martyn had three birdies in his 37 points.
Thanks to Tom Elder for organising the event for the first time and to Competition Secretary Ian Jeffrey for inputting scores and ensuring handicaps will come down at midnight!
The Rex Warren Medal will return to Driffield GC at the end of September 2027 (date tbc).
