Heartbreak for Hull in Yorkshire JCTC at Thirsk

Hull Junior Captain Harry Earl (pictured right) continued his excellent recent form with a remarkable 47 points in the Yorkshire Junior Club Team Championship on Sunday 14 July. Hull were representing the East Riding Union following their victory in the ER Junior Team Championship at Hornsea GC six weeks ago.

With the best two from three stableford scores to count against the other seven Union champions, Hull looked favourites as George Pepper (centre) carded a superb 37 points and Harry stood 12 under the card with just three to play. Bobby Beasley's 31 points would end up being the discarded score.

Harry scorched around a very wet Thirsk & Northallerton Golf Club (where all bunkers were out of play) dropping only six shots to par off his 15.6 handicap index. Late double bogies at 16 and 17 took the shine off an amazing round of golf, but a sensational chip in from 25 yards at the uphill par 3 last for a birdie in front of the clubhouse looked to have won the title for Hull. It all depended on how the Leeds trio had finished from Garforth GC who had two players well under par most of the afternoon. No other union broke par with their two scores combined.

Garforth's best score was a 43 point haul followed by a 41 from a player receiving 37 shots!! So Leeds tied with East Riding on 84 points, but took the trophy on the back of a better third card of 37. They go on to represent Yorkshire at the England Golf Junior County Final at Woodhall Spa. Harry deservedly took home the award for best individual score of the day and had his WHI cut by 3.6 shots! Yorkshire President Phil Woodcock presented Harry with his quaich.

A cruel end to a fantastic day, but a brilliant achievement by these three young men who were a credit to the Union, the club and their families.
