ERUGC Team Championship at Burstwick Country Golf
Sunday 10th May 2026
Union officials were up with the lark to set up the first ERUGC Championship of the year, only to be greeted by a cheeky easterly wind that had shorts-wearing optimists scurrying back to the car park for extra layers.
Starter Andy Pittaway sent the first group on their way at 07:30, led by Hull’s Jacob Hodgson, Burstwick’s Martin Fox, and the ever-reliable Immediate Past President Dave Greenwood flying the flag for Beverley & ER.
Fifteen teams from just 10 of the Union’s 25 clubs was a touch disappointing in terms of numbers, but the quality of golf more than made up for it.
Morning Round – an eagerly anticipated start to the season
Filey’s George Davies set the pace with one of only two sub-par rounds of the day. A blemish-free 31 out, featuring four birdies one at the 9th, was followed by a minor wobble on 10 and 11. Undeterred, Davies cruised home to sign for a fine 3-under 68.
Home favourite Paul Wray carded a solid 70, mixing five birdies with four bogeys. He’ll be muttering about the 17th and 18th for a while – especially the 18th, which proved to be the toughest hole on the course. Several of the less talented golfers in the crowd were seen nodding sagely at the scoreboard.
Sitting six shots back on +3 were Burstwick’s talented youngster Lewis Hunt, Hull’s Aaron Brettell, and Filey’s Tom Sanghera.
Afternoon Round – the stamina sapping conclusion
Filey held the lead after the morning, but it could have been so much bigger. Jonny Pickard, their vital third man, found the out-of-bounds twice on the last for a nine. Ouch.
Burstwick were 3 back, Hornsea 1 were 7 back with Hull, Hornsea 2 and Brough 1 and further shot in arrears
What followed was a masterclass from the Filey boys. George Davies went even better, posting a scintillating 65 (33-32). Team-mate Tom Sanghera joined the party with a 3-under 67 that included a hole-in-one on the 14th – the undisputed highlight of the day.
Lewis Hunt kept Burstwick in the hunt with a composed 69 (12 straight pars before a birdie on 13), while Hull’s Charlie Milner produced the round of the day improvement-wise, leaping forward by 10 shots with his own 69.
The Filey trio stayed admirably focussed as Pickard’s rollercoaster back nine ensued. Eight over through nine holes, he steadied the ship impressively, coming home in 1-under 34 with a crucial birdie at the tricky 16th. Proper character.
Final Results
Filey 221 + 209 = 430 (+10)
Hull 229 + 212 = 441 (+21)
Ganton 233 + 219 = 452 (+32)

Hull produced a strong late surge to take second on +21 (441), with Ganton third inspired by Tom Benson and his outrageous back-nine 30 (featuring eagles at 10 and 13 – impressive!).
Hornsea 2 (pictured below) edged out Scarborough 2 for the Nett prize (+18 to +19).
