One Hall of a day at Hornsea for President's Am-Am

2024 ERUGC President's Am-Am

Firstly, I should like to thank Hornsea Golf Club my home club for allowing me courtesy of the course today to hold my President’s AM:AM.

The course was a pleasure to play with Gareth and the green staff having worked hard to ensure it was in top condition, with lush fairways and, as always, excellent greens.

Emma was here to welcome the you all into the clubhouse with Clare behind the bar looking after the thirsty players and the kitchens working all day providing bacon sandwiches and coffee all morning then a two course meal when teams returned to the clubhouse after their rounds of golf. My thanks also go to Rich our pro with Yvonne and Nathan in the shop for their support.

Can I take this opportunity to thank the following golf clubs for their continued support of the East Riding Union and who have provided vouchers to play at Hornsea, Beverley & East Riding, Bridlington, Brough, Burstwick Country Golf, Cottingham Parks, Drax, Driffield, Filey, Hainsworth Park, Hessle, Hull, Kilnwick Percy Country Club, Scarborough North Cliff, Scarborough South Cliff & Ganstead Park.

To the following East Riding Union professionals may I thank you for donating a golf lesson to improve our players here today from Gary Brown at Ganton, Paul Gibson at Beverley & East Riding, Steve Mackinder at Cave Castle, Paul Lockwood at Driffield and Paul Mayoh at Hainsworth Park. Thanks also to Steve Alsop from Hessle Golf Club for donating a box of 12 Callaway golf balls.

What a day we all had, the weather forecast was to be overcast, but on arriving at Hornsea GC the earlier players found mist and those players teeing off after 12 o’clock found a gentle breeze, but we all stayed dry.

With nearest the pin on all par 3s and, at the President's request, nearest in two on the par 4 12th hole, (that of the pond in front with a sloping green and with the pin in the middle encouraged those to go for it)

Early scores and comments suggested that the course was in excellent condition and was allowing the players to attack the pins. Nearest the pins, all placed to ensure they were tough, but in view, were all closely contested. This was particularly true at the 12th when one of the later starters, Ian Jones of Hull Golf Club arrowed a 9 iron to the front right pin (pictured below) and duly picked up his fourball at Hainsworth Park prize.

All taking part were complimentary about the day. To finish the day all of the teams enjoyed steak pie and chips or a ham salad followed by chocolate brownie or cheesecake. Comments on the food supplied by Emma and her very friendly team were consistent in their praise.

After a long day, the winners listed below were announced at around 7pm:

1st place team with 95 points on count back, winning 4 £75 M&S food hampers with a 9:40 tee time from Cottingham Parks GC, were Howard Hill, G Tomkinson, S Megginson & G McDermott
