Am-Am at Hull

Thursday 8th September

Our thanks to those who turned out for our last Members Meeting of the season. This was a replacement for the earlier Meeting originally planned at Boothferry, and we are immensely grateful to Hull GC for accommodating us at such short notice. As usual, Aaron Pheasant and his team looked after us handsomely throughout the day, both in terms of course preparation and looking after our very demanding drinking and catering needs. Due to the short notice, it was incumbent upon us to accommodate a prebooked Ryder Cup style match (including American visitors) during the morning, who made a very unexpected donation to our funds, which is very much appreciated.

Arriving at 7:30, the weather did not bode well, but the early teams set off suitably attired, with umbrellas deployed to get us off to a good start. The Course Manager, Dave Norton, had ensured that all flagsticks had been positioned on the high spots of all greens but, in the event, there was no problem with standing water throughout the day. By late morning the rain had cleared and indeed the rest of the day was played under blue skies and very calm conditions.

Our Registration Desk regular, Steve Thornton, had to defer to his Captain’s duties at Flamborough during the morning, and therefore I am immensely grateful to Edward & Eileen Clarke who stepped in and supervised from dawn ’til dusk – their experience of this role for many years previously certainly shone through!

The listing of eventual prize-winners is attached in pdf format below. As this is the last event of the season, would the organiser of each team please let me have their address and I will post the team’s prize-vouchers to you.

My thanks also to those 94 Members who completed the short survey questionnaire which we distributed with the score cards. In particular, thank you for the many kind comments regarding the atmosphere at the Members Meetings. The data provided will allow us to add to our notifications listings, and provide some useful views when deciding the format for next season. We will be circulating next season’s venues and taking bookings before the end of the year.

Am-Am at Beverley & East Riding

Thursday 18th August

Thanks to everyone who turned out yesterday, although the morning rain was a surprise! Considering the near drought conditions over the last 6 weeks or so, I thought the course was in remarkable condition and the Beverley turf (in between cow-pats) always seems to remain relatively soft. It’s not easy for our Golf Clubs to feed and water so many of us during such a long day so hats off to all the staff who looked after us so well. Thanks, as usual, to Steve Thornton for manning the Registration Desk from start to finish.

The scoring was relatively high across most of the 45 teams who took part. Attached you’ll find a list of the eventual prize winners. Congratulations in particular to our President, John Illingworth, and his team who managed an impressive 91 point leading score.

Fourball Betterball at Ganstead Park

Thursday 7th July

Another very enjoyable event yesterday thanks, in no small part, to the welcome and hospitality extended by our hosts, Ganstead Park Golf Club and, in particular, Tony Barker who made sure everyone was being looked after throughout the day. We were blessed, once again, with wonderful weather and thanks to Steve Thornton and our President, John Illingworth, for manning the Registration Desk from start to finish. Thank you to everyone who supported us yesterday and for making these such enjoyable events. It was particularly high scoring with the following eventual Prize Winners:

Members Meeting – Burstwick Country Golf – 19th August 2021

Our last Members Meeting of the season took place at Burstwick Golf & Country Club. We are immensely grateful to Alan Key and his staff for hosting the event at short notice when we lost our original venue.

The 164 ER Members taking part were well ‘fed & watered’ by Alan’s accommodating team of bar and catering staff and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves both on and off the course. Steve Thornton once again did sterling work on the registration desk ably supported by John Illingworth when he wasn’t enjoying himself on the course, which was in excellent condition. Most players however were wondering if we had upset whoever had set the pin positions and he’d taken somewhat harsh revenge (certainly I’ve never had a 3ft put finish 20ft away at right angles before!).

My thanks to everyone who has given such tremendous support to the Members Meetings this year. In all, 1164 rounds of golf have been completed.  NEXT SEASON’S Members Meetings details and schedule will be circulated shortly giving Members the opportunity to prebook as usual.

Members Meeting – Flamborough Golf Club – 5th August 2021

An East Riding Union event at Flamborough was well overdue and therefore we were delighted that the weather held to make it yet another success in our season of Members Meetings. There were 184 players welcomed to the Club by our hosts – the hospitality of officials and staff, and forbearance of their regular Members, was much appreciated, together with the course which had been prepared to a very enjoyable standard.

Thanks also to the ever supportive Steve Thornton and our Union Secretary John Illingworth who manned the desk from dawn ‘til dusk on this occasion.

Members Meeting – Hull Golf Club – 8th July 2021

The sun shone down on surroundings which reflected the major effort put in by Aaron Pheasant and his team both on and off the course after the torrential rain experienced earlier in the week. Dave and Peter directed car-parking, Hadyn, Graham and Keith (Sam) ensured everyone was briefed on the first tee, and the immaculately turned out Steve and Ben manned the Proshop and created and maintained the live leader board. And everyone was well ‘fed & watered’ by Emily’s bar and catering team on the terrace well into the evening.

As usual, Steve Thornton manned the Registration Desk from ‘dawn ‘til dusk’ but this time, unfortunately, he had to deal with the problem of bad mobile signal and wifi reception which stopped us taking card payments on our mobile terminal. Thank you to everyone for adapting to the alternative cash and bar-terminal arrangements.

Finally, we are immensely grateful to all the Clubs who host these events and the understanding of their Members who often have to forego their regular Thursday activities.

A very welcome 45 teams supported the event between 8am and 4pm – perhaps surprising given the number of sore heads around after the England/Denmark match the night before!

The Prize Winners were as follows:-

Prize Vouchers will be available for collection at our next Meeting at Flamborough on the Thursday 5th August.

The average score was a relatively low 76 off the Yellow tees with the course playing ‘long’ after the heavy rain. Only 13 gross 2s were recorded out of the 720 par 3s played. Just 4 7-pointers,and 75 6-pointers were recorded in the 3,240 holes played. No team failed to score on any hole although 4 1-pointers were recorded.

Thank you once again for your support and we look forward to seeing most of you again at Flamborough on the 5th August.

Members Meeting – Hessle Golf Club – 17th June 2021

49, 4-man teams took part in our third Meeting of the season, hosted by Hessle GC.  The forecasted storms thankfully didn’t arrive and the weather improved throughout the day. The condition of the course was well received by everyone and the staff deserve praise for dealing so well with the difficult conditions over the last few months. Our appreciation also goes to all the Hessle members for allowing us to hijack their course for the whole day from dawn to dusk.
