Hull Golf Club
In 100 years of golf played at Kirk Ella, rarely can there have been a more thrilling finish to an event as the 2025 East Riding Junior Championship was decided by six holes of play off drama.
Hull’s George Pepper eventually prevailed over Ganton’s Ewan Mackenzie in front of a large crowd after a long day for players and officials alike.
As someone once said, let’s start at the very beginning, as it’s a very good place to start!
A healthy entry of 48 of the area’s best juniors gathered at Hull Golf Club for this year’s championship with the players going out from 7.30am in roughly reverse order of handicap. Many of the East Riding Junior Team were there hoping to lift the T.R. Leak Trophy, with the final group of Ganton’s Ewan Mackenzie and Hornsea’s Seth Topham as many people’s favourites for the title.
Ewan’s morning was not the round he was expecting and stuggled with a lot of pulls off the tee, but got it round in 78. Seth was not on his game and limped to lunch with an uncharacteristc 85.
The third member of the final group however, Max Walker of Brough, came out of the blocks with a stunning start and was 3 under through five holes around Hull’s notoriously tough start. He even lipped out for birdie at the 6th! He dropped shots around the turn, but held it together for a fantastic 74 to lead at halfway from Pepper’s solid 75. No one else broke 80, as the slick and subtle greens caught many a youngster out.
So to the afternoon and Max felt pressure immediately as Ewan birdied the 1st against his bogey. A triple at the second and Max’s lead had been wiped out, but in the group ahead, George was clocking up the pars. Max eventually carded a gutsy 81, to finish third overall. Ewan was ruing a strange choice of driver at the 7th which cost him a double bogey and then surprisingly dropped a shot at the par 5 12th which was playing very short for the long bombers.
A wedge at 13 perked him up a bit which pitched 6 feet past the flag and spun back into the hole! Nothing like an ace to tidy up a card! Pars at the next four holes gave Ewan a sniff, but no-one knew how George was faring in the group ahead. Another 75 was the answer and George waitied behind the 18th green with many of the other players and parents hoping that Ewan couldn’t match his 150 total.
As it turned out, Ewan was 11 over the day standing on the last tee. A birdie required to tie….
Another big pull actually wasn’t a problem, as it left the Yorkshire Boys regular only a 50 degree wedge from the middle of the 1st fairway. A back left pin was the only real difficulty. Ewan went for the flag, but his approach kicked over the back left of the green leaving a very tricky chip. No problem – chop its legs off, bounce, bounce, check, roll…straight into the cup.

Playoff time!
A three hole aggregate loop was decreed over holes 1, 4 and 5. Spectators followed the two gladiators up the first fairway in the setting sun (pictured below) and were treated to an hour’s golf which wouldn’t have been out of place on the PGA Tour. George thought he had it won a couple of times only for Ewan to drive into the right greenside bunker at the downwind 5th and escape from the sand to 3 feet and nervelessly holing out to take us to sudden death over the same holes in order.

It was now the turn of Pepper to summon up his touch around the greens with a miraculous up and down for par at the 1st, leaving Mackenzie to once again show some nerve by holing from 4 feet to keep us going in front of around 50 spectators and officials. Both parred the 4th, before we finally found a winner at the 5th.
Both players bombed drivers again at the downwind par 4, with Ewan holding the advantage in the right semi 30 yards short of the green, whilst George looked in a bit of difficulty at the end of the left tree line. A lob wedge from under one tree and over another landed over the left bunker perfectly and released down the quick green and settled 8 inches behind the hole. Ewan could only manage a four and Hull’s home grown Pepper tapped in for the title (pictured below).

Phew!
ERUGC President Dave Greenwood presented the trophy to George in front off Hull’s magnificent clubhouse to round off a terrific day’s play.

The nett competition was won by another Hull youngster Callum Akester. He and Charlie Simpson both shot impressive 65s in the morning, before Callum followed it up with a nett 66 to pull clear. Charlie was runner-up with his 4 under 136 total.
A big thanks to all at Hull Golf Club for presenting the course in such wonderful condition and to the clubhouse staff for looking after everyone so warmly. To starter Andy Pittaway (and an hour of Edward Clark) for getting everyone away on time and then to Ian Jeffrey for organising the whole day and processing the results and to ERUGC Secretary John Illingwoth for manning the desk from 7am to 7pm – another titanic effort from these two!
A long day for all, but truly memorable given the high standard of golf in an epic play-off. And the headline and report hasn’t even mentioned ‘Red Hot Pepper’!

A dry breezy day greeted the competitors for the 2024 East Riding Junior Championship at Hainsworth Park GC which was in fine condition.
37 Juniors entered on the day, 25 for the 36 hole Junior Championship.
Play started at 8am and the mature trees soon took their toll on many slightly wayward shots.
Leading after the first round was a 6 over par 77 for Seth Topham (Hornsea), who held on after a flying start with birdies at 3 of the first 4 holes. This was followed closely by Tom Adcock (Cave Castle) and Harry Mukerjea (Ganton) 79 , Tom Hinks (Hull) 80, Bobby Beasley (Hull) 81, Ethan Matthews (Burstwick) 82 and Jack Wall (Cave Castle) 83.
A thought for contender Charles Wright (Ganton GC) who mistakenly signed for a wrong score on the first hole, realised over lunch it was wrong and returned to the desk to rectify to a 78 which saw him unfortunately disqualified. Charles took it on the chin and went out to shoot 74 in the afternoon. A great response.
The other scores throughout the field generally improved for the 2nd round, but Seth’s excellent level par 71, with 3 birdies and 3 bogies, saw him home comfortably on a total of 148. Other notable scores in the afternoon were Oliver Spencer (Cottingham) 78 and Ethan Matthews, George Pepper (Hull), Freddie Moore (Hainsworth Park) Thomas Adcock and Harry Mukerjea all with 79
Congratulations to Seth Topham of Hornsea GC on a great win!!

Summer finally arrived for the 2023 East Riding Junior Championship at Cottingham Parks GC which was in great condition.
41 Juniors entered for the day, the majority for the 36 hole Junior Championship.
Play started at 8am and it looked to be a hot calm day with the chance to shoot low scores.
Highlights of the first round were a excellent one over par 73 for Amy Staveley (Ganton GC), followed closely by Warren Burns 74, Callum Burns and Ewan Mackenzie both 75, (all from Cottingham Parks GC) . Luke Townhill (Ganton GC ), with a 76 was the only other player in the field to break 80 and this group were the contenders going into the afternoon round.
Although scores throughout the field generally improved for the 2nd round only Amy and Callum improved on their morning card. Luke & Warren fell away with 82’s and Ewan a 77.
Callum’s 73, with 6 birdies, was not enough to catch Amy who shot the best round of the day with a two under 70, which included 5 birdies and an eagle on the 10th.
Congratulatons Amy who adds the East Riding Junior Championship to the Yorkshire Girls title she won in July.
Although 2nd in the gross event Callums two scores were enough to see him win the nett championship with 69 & 67 for a total of 136. Just edging out Jack Wall ( Cave Castle GC) 68 & 69 and a 137 total.
The lowest single nett round of the day went to George Pepper of Hull GC with a 66 in the afternoon

Jack Northgraves wins 2022 Junior Championship

Another ‘blistering day’ was the forecast for the Junior Championship and they were not wrong. Not a cloud in the sky all day and hot!!! The hill top location of the KP Club provided the perfect setting.
37 Juniors entered for the day, the majority for the 36 hole Junior Championship.
Play started at 8am with all players fully loaded with water and covered with factor 50. It promised to be a hard 36 holes.
Highlights of the first round were a excellent level par 70, with 4 birdies & 4 bogeys, for Jack Northgraves (Ganton) closely followed by Harry Mukerjea (Hull) 72, Grace Lambert (Hessle) 74, and Cooper Beck and Callum Burns (both Cottingham) with 75’s
The second round saw a wilting field replenished by the ER water wagon as every entrant completed the 36 holes with no hole not scored on ( i.e. no NR’s) Well done all, great effort.
Jack, in the first group out, completed a second round 78 for a 148 total, leaving it open for the chasers to pip him to the title if they posted a similar or slightly improved score in the afternoon. Cooper playing with Jack matched his morning score with a 75 to finish on 150, Grace fell away with an 81 leaving Harry as the only late challenge, unfortunately after a 36 out Harry couldn’t hold on and finished with a 78 for another 150 total. Bobbly Beasley (Cottingham) was one of the few to improve in the second round and with an excellent 75 finished on 152.
Well done Jack a deserved winner.
For the net trophy Harry Muckerjea’s net 63 & 69 for a 8 under total of 132 saw Harry defend the trophy he won in 2021. Billy Hazlewood (Filey) was the net runner up with a 70 & 66 for a 136 total.

Jacob Greenwood wins 2022 Junior Development Championship
Following the first round tee off times of the Junior Championship it was time to launch the inaugral Junior Development Championship.
This competition is for the improving player or the younger golfer (with a handicap index of 24.5 or above) who want a taste of ‘Championship Golf’.
All three groups were announced on to the tee by ER starter Andy Pittaway. For a few it was their first time off a yellow tee but all proceeded to smack the ball straight down the middle…No nerves at all…
The players were on their own as regards golfing decisions and general play. Parents and ER support helped each group keep up with play, but it was great to see how they all handled their game and also how much they enjoyed it.
Leading the way and winner on the day after the 18 holes was Jacob Greenwood (Hornsea). Receiving 39 shots Jacob had nothing higher than a 7 on his card as he posted a total of 44 points. Very steady play.
In second place was Charlie Simpson from Hull Golf Club who had 42 pts which included 3 pars.
In 3rd place was Malci Greenwood of Boothferry Golf Club, who again had 3 pars in his 38 pts.
| Pos. | Player | Club | Score Pts |
| Winner | Jacob Greenwood | Hornsea | 44 |
| 2nd | Charlie Simpson | Hull | 42 |
| 3rd | Malci Greenwood | Boothferry | 38 |
It must be noted that some of these players are only 10 and 11 years old and it was more the physical test, than their skill, that thwarted much lower scores. Hopefully this taste of a Junior golf day will see them move up to the Junior Championship and beyond in the next few years.
But more importantly develop a life long love for the game of golf.
President for 2022 John IIlingworth launched an encouraging ‘Churchillian’ type speech, which although for the field was the first time they had encountered John’s ramblings, it seemed to be warmly welcomed by the players, large supporting groups of parents, grandparents and all.
Thank you to all the greens staff for again presenting the course in excellent condition despite the lack of rain, the.club house staff and all at Kilnwick Percy Golf Club for the warm welcome and hospitality throughout the day.
Edward & Eileen Clark for again manning the desk and Andy Pittaway our starter. Thanks also to Gary Sharp of KP Club, John Illingworth and Dave Greenwood, who walked round with each group. All three said it was an enjoyable, if hot, experience.
Please keep an eye on the wwww.erugc.co.uk website for the 2023 fixtures which will be appearing shortly
Results of the 2021 Junior Championship
The last Championship of the East Riding Union of Golf Clubs season took place on Thursday the 5th of August at Boothferry Golf Club.

Leading the way after the morning round was Tommy Risker with a 1 under 72. Followed by Luke Thornton with a 74 and Harry Anderson with a 77. A cluster of players a few shots further back. The best net was Harry Mukerjea with a nett 68.
Tommy and Harry will go forward to play in the next round of the Daily Telegraph Trophy.
With the breeze strengthening no one was able to catch Tommy in the afternoon despite a 75 from Jack Northgraves , 76 from George Clark and 77 ‘s from Harry Anderson and Luke Thornton. Tommy shot a 2nd round of 75 despite dropping 2 shots at the last hole. A winner by 4 shots.

MAXEY WINS JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP FOR SECOND YEAR IN A ROW
It was a lovely summer’s day for the ERUGC Junior Championship at Burstwick on Wednesday 1st August, with many of the players turning up in shorts in order to soak up some sunshine on their way around the par 70 track.

Out first were the low handicap trio of Hornsea’s Jack Maxey, Scarborough North Cliff’s Tom Duck and Cottingham Parks’ Dan Swales, and as all three blazed irons straight down the middle of the dogleg first hole, it was obvious one of these boys may well light the course up in the benign morning conditions.
A total of 39 players were in the field, but a couple of notable names were missing due to other commitments including the Rob McLeish Trophy winner from the East Riding Amateur, Lewis Hunt.
As the first round progressed, word began to spread around the field that the reigning champion Jack Maxey was on for an extremely good score. As Jack stood on the tee of the tough 18th hole (index six, with Out Of Bounds left and right, and a looming water hazard) with a score of six under par, he needed a par or better to set a new amateur course record, but a two errors of judgement resulting in him hitting 5-off-the-tee showed just how cruel golf can be. A resulting quadruple bogey closed the round on a score of 2 under par (68), bringing the chasing field back into the mix.
Jack’s playing partner Tom Duck carded a very solid level-par 70 to keep within reaching distance of the leader going into round two.
As the later players were finishing their first 18 holes the conditions just started to worsen ever so slightly, as temperatures dropped by a couple of degrees and the wind increased to around 15mph, so thoughts were that the second round would yield higher scores across the board – but this was not to be the case.
Into round two and players were becoming more settled with the course and notable afternoon rounds were posted by Dan Swales (72), Charlie Milner (73) and Alfie Tidder (74), but no players again could match Maxey’s scoring with a second round 68 to finish on 136.
In the end Jack won the tournament by eight shots from Tom Duck on 144 and Charlie Milner on 148, showing that his course experience (having been a member of Burstwick for nearly a decade) and a level of talent that gets him in to the Yorkshire team were not to be reckoned with on the day.
The nett score winner was Jack Eastman with two very impressive rounds of 65+66 to post a total of 131, one shot ahead of Alfie Tidder and Luke Thornton. Great shooting from both Jacks!
Thank you to all of the junior golfers from the East Riding Union who played in the event, and well done to the Jack Maxey on retaining the title!
Thank you to East Riding Officials John Illingworth, Chris Clarkson and Phil Woodcock for organising and assisting on the day, and thank you to Alan Key and his staff at Burstwick for their excellent hospitality and beautifully presented golf course.
