Matty Raybould overcame three bogies on the back nine of round two to hold on to win the 2025 Amateur Championship at a sundrenched KP Club.
Things were tight at lunchtime with eight players within five shots of Matty’s best of the day 68. He had a solid, if unspectacular start to the 36 hole blue riband event in the Union calendar, but put himself in the box seat with three birdies in his flawless back nine of 32.
Reigning champion Jon Samuel had four birdies on the spin on the home half to look like equalling Matty’s opening round, but a watery triple bogey at the tricky 17th undid all of that good work. His 71 was matched by Luke Townhill, back from College in the States, with Tom Duck and Charlie Milner a shot further back with their 72s.
So to the afternoon and Hornsea’s Raybould was quickly out of the blocks with three birdies in his first five holes. With Townhill, Milner and Duck not having a birdie between them on the opening nine and Samuel treading water with a level par 35, including a double bogey at the (very) long 4th, Matty seemed to have one hand on the H.W. Collins Trophy.
However, dropped shots at two of KP’s obvious birdie chances (10 & 11) followed by another unforced bogey at the short downhill par 4 16th, gave others a sniff. Matty held it together though with a safe tee shot (ie. dry) at 17 (pictured above) to set up a two putt par and a stress free regulation four at 18 to set the clubhouse target of 139.
Samuel gave a brave defence of his title, but a bogey at 17 effectively ended his challenge. Not his favourite hole of the day. He is pictured below receiving his voucher from ERUGC President Dave Greenwood.

That just left Scarborough North Cliff’s Tom Duck (below) on a charge with birdies at 13 and 15, but chances slipped by at 16 and 17, leaving his superb 3 at the last as immaterial. A second successive runner up spot for Duck then as Raybould won by two shots to complete an East Riding Triple Crown of sorts following his Junior Championship wins in 2015 and 2016 and victory in the ER Open Championship in 2017.

Huxley Sawyer (below) of Cave Castle picked up the Rob McLeish Trophy for the best junior performance with his 150 – eight clear of his clubmate Tom Adcock.

KP member Tom Cosgrove proved that a bit of course knowledge is invaluable and took the nett prize with two level rounds of 70.
As always, a very long day for the organisers who arrived at 7am. Ian Jeffrey organised the whole event superbly, with injured ERUGC President Dave Greenwood forgoing his participation in the event to act as starter for the 39 competitors. He then donned the tie and blazer to present the prizes on the impressive deck in front of the KP clubhouse.. Thank you to all the KP staff, on and off the course, who made the event such a special day.

Samuel storms through the field to win a fifth Amateur
Twenty years after his first win, Jon Samuel battled the elements and a tough Ganton layout to take a one shot victory in the 2024 East Riding Union of Golf Clubs Amateur Championship.

Things were tight at lunchtime with ten players within five shots of Ewan Mackenzie who posted a fantastic level par 71 in the first round.
The ex Cottingham Parks youngster, who now plays out of Ganton, was out in 34 strokes wih birdies at the 4th and 7th. A mid round / mid storm wobble, with back to back 6s at 12 and 13, were soon put behind him, as he played the tough last five holes in one under to get back to level at lunch.
The chasing pack all left a few out there as the torrential rain came through around 12.15pm, with a real mixture of youth and experience queuing up to improve on their morning rounds and catch the leader.
Hull’s Ben Thornham finished with three bogies, but was Ewan’s nearest challenger with 73. Conversely Luke Townhill birdied two of the last three holes to sit on 74, one ahead of Ganton’s Tom Brown and four time winner Samuel. Jamie Gregory, Jacob Hodgson and Leigh Gawley were a shot further back on 76.
All to play for as the storm moved through to leave bright sunshine, but gale force winds for round two.
Scarborough North Cliff’s Tom Duck improved by ten shots in the afternoon to shoot the day’s only sub par round of 70. In the end, his bogey – bogey finish left him one short of a play-off. Hessle’s Luke Thornton had four birdies in his 71, but a poor morning had left him too much ground to make up.
Hull’s Jacob Hodgson added a 74 to match Duck’s 150 (+8) total, whilst Hessle’s Warren Burns dropped three shots over the tough last four to finish with 151 (+9). Ewan Mackenzie carded a 7 and an 8 over his front nine and looked to have surrendered his chance of winning, but he steadied the ship with a great run of holes after the turn to stand at +6 for the day with three holes to play. Two bogeys, then a lost ball off the tee at 18 ended his challenge.
That left all eyes on the final group of Ryan Gray from Driffield and Jon Samuel. Despite bogeys at 16 and 17, Jon reached the apron at the last in two and needed to get up and down for victory. An approach putt left Jon an uphill four footer for the title which he cooly converted (photo below).

Jon’s fifth victory in this event takes him clear of Mike Kelley with four (69-90) and leaves only George Ash with seven titles (51-61) and Alan Wright who won eight from 1983-2008 ahead of him on the all time roll of honour who have lifted the H.W. Collins Trophy.
Warren Burns picked up the Rob McLeish Trophy for the best junior performance with his 151 and also took home the nett prize with his 143 – winning on countback from Ganton’s Ben Staveley and Ben Thornham.
As always, a very long day for the organisers who arrived at 7am. Dave Greenwood organised the whole event superbly, ably helped on the desk all day by Ian Jeffrey and ERUGC Secretary John Illingworth who began the day as starter, before regular first tee official Andy Pittaway arrived for the bulk of the day.
ERUGC President Jonty Hall watched all afternoon and presented the prizes in the wonderful Ganton clubhouse. Thank you to all their staff, on and off the course, who made the event such a special day.

Cave Castle Golf Club
Sunday 18th June 2023
Nine years after his first win, Driffield’s Ryan Gray lifted the East Riding Amateur Championship once again after a three hole playoff victory over Ganstead’s Ray Marr.

As torrential rain finally arrived at a muggy Cave Castle Golf Club, Ryan and Ray locked horns over the short but tricky loop of the 15th, 16th and 17th holes to decide the winner after both had carded totals of two round totals of 148. They finished seven shots clear of their nearest challenger Steve Dale of Ganstead Park.
Ryan was the only player to match the par 72 in round one on a course which punished any wayward tee shots and stood three clear of Hull’s Charlie Milner at lunch. Youngsters Luke Townhill and Bobby Beasley joined Dale, Matthew Moore, Leigh Gawley and Phil Wright a further two shots further back.
The winner looked likely to come from the top eight, but no-one had considered the possibility of anyone breaking par and coming from further back which is exactly what Ray Marr did. Two opening birdies set the tone and an incredible round of 70 followed with only one dropped shot at the notoriously difficult 10th.
So, as other challengers fell away, Ryan needed a 75 to lift the H.W. Collins Trophy and looked set to do so until bogies at the short 14th and 17th holes left him tied with Ray. A three hole playoff was needed to find a winner as the skies darkened.
At the 15th, Gray birdied from 15 feet, whilst Marr bravely got up and down from the greenside bunker to stay in touch. At the 16th, Gray found the green in two from the right rough, but Marr took three to get out of the fairway bunker and the result was all but settled. Matching pars at the 17th and Ryan’s second Amateur Championship was sealed.
ERUGC President Mike Dawson presented the trophy to Ryan whilst Bobby Beasley took home the Rob McLeish Cup for leading junior with a total of 161 and also the best nett total of the day with 143 (Marr had 140, but gross runner up took precedence)

Beverley & East Riding Golf Club
Sunday 19th June 2022
A dry day with a fresh wind from the west ensured a tough start to the first round of the 2022 ERUGC Amateur Championship.
The course was beautifully presented and the greens in pristine condition. The rough was very fair but punishing if you strayed too far from the fairways. It provided a stern test for the Amateur Championship, as it should, and keeping it straight was the order of the day.
Of the early starters Jamie Gill (Beverley & ER) with a 4 over 73 led a group of 12 players all within 3 shots. It looked as though it was to be a close contest until Jake Sowden (Ganton) came in with a level par 69 and Steve Uzzell (Hornsea) in the last group of the morning with a fine 66 with 1 dropped shot and 4 birdies.
As the field teed off for the afternoon round the wind had switched through 180 degrees and presented a totally different challenge.
Scores were generally lower for the second round with Mike Robson (Beverley & ER) shooting 70 and Rob Draper (Burstwick) a level par 69 to take 3rd and 4th place respectively.
Luke Thornton (Hessle) added a 74 to his morning 73 to win the Rob McCleish Trophy for the best gross score for an U18 player.
Neil Gordon (Beverley & ER) shot gross 74 & 71 for a net total of 137 to win the best net prize.
In the afternoon no one could catch the leading pair and a tense finish saw Jake post a 1 under par 68. Having heard Steve had dropped a few shots either side of the turn the title was “on the line”. Uzzell has reached the top in the amateur game and unsurprisingly he managed to regroup and finish with a 71 to tie Sowden on 137
In accordance with Union rules the title is decided by playoff. Both players headed off across the Westwood followed by a small group of supporters which included Steve ‘Radar’ Lynch’s live video feed for a 3 – hole play-off on the first, seventeenth and last holes.
The 1st was halved in 4’s but Jake pushed his tee shot right into the trees on the 17th and had to chip out. Steve’s approach ran through the green but he managed to get up and down for a par 4 while Jake could not recover and made bogey.
On the 18th Jake hit the green and made par. Steve, who had gone long, had a chip over the back bunker which left him with a 5ft curling, downhill putt to win – it never looked like missing and Uzzell won his first ERUGC Amateur Championship. Congratulations Steve.
A great finish to a good day and well done to runner up Jake Sowden, who showed great maturity for his 19 years. He will have many other chances in the future.
Many thanks go to Beverley & East Riding GC members for giving up their course for the day; Club Professional Paul Gibson who was always on hand from 07.00 and throughout the day; to several Beverley Members who acted as marshals at busy parts of the Westwood; to referees Steve Whiting and (ERUGC Past President) Cameron Thomson; Chrissie and her catering staff in the clubhouse; and finally to Neil Burnley and his small team of green keepers who presented the course in such an outstanding manner.
Beverley & ER Club Secretary, Andrew Webster liaised closely with Union Officials in the weeks before the event, this unseen preparation ensuring a smooth running event – thank you Andrew.
Thanks also to our starter Andy Pittaway and Union President John Illingworth who manned the desk all day again…
Entry is now also open for East Riding Open Championship on the 17th July at Burstwick GC.
Full results are always on the East Riding Howdidido page. A full list of prize winners is below and vouchers will be distributed in due course.
President’s footnote: Major thanks from me to the ever modest Dave Greenwood who did the vast majority of the preparation work for this event on behalf of the Union.

Results of the 2021 Amateur Championship
Scarborough North Cliff 20th June 2021
The weatherman was predicting a wet and miserable day for the Championship throughout the preceding week. Mercifully he was, once again, incorrect, with overcast and calm conditions early on followed in the afternoon by some sun but a strengthening breeze. At 07.30 ERUGC Past President Derrick Arden set the first group, in a field of 60 players, on their way with the home club’s Simon Boddy being joined by Ganton’s Steve Pybus and Driffield’ s Jason Oakley.
Universally, the players were highly complimentary about the presentation of the course by Head Greenkeeper, Colin Fairley and his team. A hard but fair test it turned out to be for Hornsea favourites Nick Raybould, his brother Matty, Leigh Gawley and Jack Maxey. Also expected to feature, defending Champion Steve Lynch from Boothferry, Ganstead Park’s Mark Lamb, 3 times Champion Fraser Kelly and Ganton’s Jamie Gregory.
A large entry from the ERUGC Junior team included Hull’s Will Storr, Jacob Hodgson and George Clark, Scarborough South Cliff’s Tommy Risker, Yorkshire U14 Boys Champion form Hessle’s Luke Thornton, Ganton’s Yorkshire Boys Captain, Jake Sowden and Jack Northgraves, Marcus Moore, and Tom Benson from the host club. Special mention to Hornsea’s 14 year old Alfie Anderson who entered when many more illustrious players failed to make the journey north. Well done that man!
It was pleasing to see the first group complete their first round in under 3 and a quarter hours – PGA Tour please note. Half way leaders included Maxey and Nick Raybould (70), Will Storr and Jack Northgraves (71) Tommy Risker, Aaron Brettell and Mark Lamb (73) with a further 10 players within 5 of the lead. Matty Raybould on 77 would have been delighted to replay holes 5 & 12 where the 7 dropped shots essentially cost him a tie for the lead and possibly the title. Golf is indeed a game of small margins.
Ostensibly there was all to play for in the afternoon but Maxey had other ideas. He was 4 under par through only 5 holes from where he didn’t drop a shot. He hit every green in regulation for an impressive 68, 4 under par. Closest rival Raybould got it to 3 under par through 8 but fell away to a 75. Jack Maxey was the winner of the H.W Collins Trophy and East Riding Union Amateur Champion for 2021 with an emphatic 7 shot victory.
The race for the Rob McCleish Trophy, best Junior in the field, was a much tighter affair with Northgraves, Storr, Sowden and Hodgson all in the mix. However, the morning 71 by Northgraves, on his home course, proved to be just good enough, taking the trophy with 71 + 75 = 146 and 3rd place overall.
Honourable mentions for the afternoon include Steve Lynch (70) , Matty Raybould (71) Boothferry’s Jamie Bancroft (72) Simon Boddy (72) and 4th place overall, Rees Brown (72). Junior Captain, George Clark (73) and Lewis Nicholls (73).

My thanks to the host club, Scarborough North Cliff, their team led by Manager Jo Duck were exemplary.
Thank you to ERUGC Officials, President John Chambers, Derrick Arden (morning starter),the incomparable Stephen Larard (afternoon starter) Howard Palmer, Edward Clark, Stephen Wright, Steve Thornton for all doing their bit. It was an absolute delight to see Scarborough legend and ERUGC Past President John Freeman getting down to see some golf.
Many thanks to Competition Secretary Dave Greenwood who, almost single handed, did all the Championship preparation.
60 players participated, thank you – not a bad effort but it is always good to get a full field of 72. Hopefully that will be the case at our Open Championship at Hull GC on 25th July – online entries are available now. We are also hoping that President John Chambers will be able to present all this year’s trophies at Hull on that date.

Union Secretary
Results of the 2019 Amateur Championship
The 2019 Storetec Amateur Championship was played at Ganton Golf Club (1st round) and Brough Golf Club (2nd round), and featured some of the Union’s best golfers.
The first round was played on Sunday 30th June at Ganton where conditions were beyond difficult, with wind gusting to more than 30mph throughout the day. The field of 71 players found the course very challenging to say the least, with many scoring over 90 and even 100.
Leading scores in the clubhouse after the first round were Steve Lynch (74), Tom Duck (77), Nick Raybould (78) and Jamie Gregory (79), fantastic scoring for the conditions.
Going into round two at Brough a week later and the weather was much more benign, which meant that plenty of players had an opportunity to catch the leader.
In the end Steve shot a very solid score of 72 (total 146) to fend off the nearest challengers Alan Wright (149) and Nick Raybould (149) to take the title, a formidable two rounds of golf well deserving of the championship. Congratulations Steve!

Results of the 2018 Amateur Championship
The long hot summer decided to take a vacation for the East Riding Amateur Championship and the 67 competitors were treated to a more traditional English summer’s day. A cool and decidedly dank start greeted the 7.00am tee time but conditions were about to worsen. Winds lashing at up to 40mph and rain sweeping horizontally across the course removed the last, lingering vestiges of what might be deemed as an entertaining pastime.

It is a tribute to the quality of the golfers that they managed to complete the course in anything like a decent score. All had tales of woe to tell on what might have been but the universal comment was “I’ve never played golf in conditions like that”. It wasn’t surprising, therefore, that with further inclement weather forecast, the Championship Committee agreed to limit the Championship to 18 holes on the basis that it was, on balance, impractical to complete the full 36.
Luke Robinson (Hornsea), Lewis Hunt (Burstwick), Jon Samuel (Hull), Andy Lockwood (Hessle) and Simon Boddy (Scarborough NC) all posted 7 over par 80’s. Matty Raybould’s 82 contained 13 pars, 4 bogies and a quintuple 9, great golf apart from the first where Ganton’s gorse got its revenge in early.
For only the second time in its history, and entirely due to the conditions, the Championship was shared when Hull’s Ben Rozenbroek and Dave Tarbotton posted 79’s. The margins were small and the victors survived just a little better than their rivals.
Burstwick’s Lewis Hunt won the Rob McLeish trophy as leading Junior in the event.
The net prize was won by Cave Castle’s Freer Boddy who finished with a net 76, just 3 over on a tough day.
The Union would like to thank Gary Pearce, the new Ganton Secretary and his team for their wonderful facilities and generous hospitality.
Thanks, as ever, to Competition Secretary Chris Clarkson for organising the event and ERUGC Hon Secretary John Illingworth for running the desk on the day.
