The final of the East Riding Union of Golf Clubs’ Match-play Championship was played at Ganton on Sunday 21st September.

The match was between Hornsea’s 33 year old Jonny Fisher-Ulliott (last year’s runner up) and 27 year old Matty Raybould also of the Hornsea Golf Club.

The early morning weather was kind with a gentle breeze and blue skies, but through the day these conditions changed from gentle to a blustery northerly wind. As the wind increased the temperature dropped making scoring relatively difficult for both players.

The opening hole was halved in regulation par fours. On the 2nd Jonny Fisher Ulliott hooked his drive into Ganton’s notorious gorse. Following a penalty drop he was unable to match Matty’s par four and so went one down. Matty’s drive on the 3rd finished just short of the 317 yard hole whilst Jonny again pulled his drive into the deep rough left of the green. Jonny managed to get his chip shot onto the green and two putt for a par, whereas Matty three putted the hole for a half. The fourth saw Matty over-club his second shot to the green and his ball finished in a bush behind the green. Having failed to get the ball out with his first attempt, he then went through the green with his fourth shot and so he conceded the hole to square the match. A three putt from Matty on the 5th saw Jonny take a one hole lead.

The game swung back to all square after the long par four 6th when Jonny three putted after leaving his first putt some 12 foot short. The first birdie of the day came on the 7th when Matty holed a twenty footer to go one up. Both players parred the 8th with fours. When both birdied the long par 5 ninth this gave Matty a 1 hole advantage after 9 holes.

The 10th saw Jonny three putt again to go 2 down. The 11th saw Matty’s first wayward drive when he found the right hand fairway bunker and he failed to find the green with his bunker shot and went on to drop a shot to Jonny’s par four and so the deficit was back to 1 hole. The next four holes were halved. On the 16th Matty hit a wayward drive into the gorse followed by shot into a green-side bunker resulting in an uncharacteristic double bogey and loss of hole. The testy long par three 17th saw both players miss the green left, Matty chipped up to about 8 foot whilst Jonny mis-judged his shot barely making the edge of the green. However Jonny managed to hole a 30 footer whilst Matty missed his 12 foot putt and so the game swung back in Jonny’s favour. The 18th saw both players get to the edge of the long green in two shots. Matty left his chip some 25 foot short whilst Jonny managed to get close enough to get his par four. When Matty missed his par putt Jonny had finished the morning round 2 up.

The opening two holes of the second round saw both players with par fours. On the 3rd hole Jonny hit a great drive just short of the green whilst Matty was in the right green-side bunker. So advantage Jonny. Unfortunately Jonny thinned his chip to the back of the green whilst Matty achieved a great sand save by splashing out and holing his eight foot putt for a birdie three. Although Jonny had the advantage following their drives on the 4th, he failed to get his wedge onto the green and consequently lost the hole to Matty’s four so bringing the game back to all square.

Holes 5 to 10 were halved with both players birdieing the 9th and bogeying the 10th. Finding the bunker on the 11th cost Jonny the hole and a poor tee shot on the 12th cost him another hole, so going 2 down. A brilliant eagle three on the par five 13th gave Matty a 3 hole lead. Roles were reversed on the 14th when Jonny eagled the short par four with an eight foot tap in. Jonny bunkered himself with his second shot to the difficult 15th so Matty’s par four was good enough to win another hole and take him to dormie 3 up. The 16th hole proved difficult for both players but when Jonny found yet another bunker green-side right, it took him two shots to get out and he conceded the hole thereby giving the match to Matty Raybould by a margin of 4&2.

Matty was presented with the Matchplay Trophy by David Greenwood, President of the East Riding Union of Golf Clubs at the after golf dinner in the Ganton Clubhouse where the Champion gave a very gracious and humble speech. A first Matchplay title for Matty to cap a stellar season in which he also lifted the ER Amateur Trophy at the KP Club.

Congratulations to Jon Samuel of Hull Golf Club – 2024 ERUGC Matchplay Champion!

Jon Samuel (Hull) bt Jonnie Fisher (Hornsea) 7&6

The final of the East Riding Union of Golf Clubs’ Matchplay Championship was played at Ganton Golf Club on Sunday 15th September.

The match was between Hornsea’s Jonny Fisher Ulliott and long established East Riding player and twice previous winner of the Match play Championship, Jon Samuel of the Hull Golf Club.

When the match teed off the early morning weather was kind with a gentle westerly breeze and blue skies, but these conditions changed rapidly when the temperature dropped, the wind strengthened and the rain moved in to provide testy conditions for both players.

The early holes set the tone of the match to come. Fisher Ulliott’s drives from the tee were considerably further than Samuel’s fairway splitting drives, but the story on the greens was the critical factor in this match. Samuel quickly got to grips with the tricky Ganton greens, whereas Fisher Ulliott struggled with the pace and lost the 1st and 3rd holes by 3 putting and, with Samuel sinking a birdie putt on the second from 8 feet, Fisher Ulliott was three down after 3 holes.

Following pars by both players on the 4th Samuel made a rare mistake by 3 putting the 5th from some 8 yards, leaving Fisher Ulliott 2 down. Samuel regained his 3-hole advantage when Fisher Ulliott bunkered himself on the long par 6th hole. Over the next three holes the players matched each other leaving Samuel with a three hole advantage after 9 holes.

Fisher Ulliott bunkered himself greenside on the short par 3 10th hole allowing Samuel to take a four hole lead. The 11th hole was birdied by both players and the 12th was parred but the 13th was gifted to Samuel when Fisher Ulliott’s putting woes came back to haunt him and his 3 putt gave Samuel a 5 hole advantage. The short par four 14th saw Fisher Ulliott drive into one of Ganton’s deep cavernous bunkers at which he needed three attempts to get out and so gifted another hole to Samuel who was now 6 up.

Both players failed to get onto the long par 4 15th hole and the two bogey 5s meant hole halved. The 16th was won by Fisher Ulliott following a prodigious fairway splitting drive and short iron in to within 8 feet which he then holed for birdie and reducing the deficit to 5 holes. The 17th saw the putting woes return and when he three putted he dropped back to 6 down. The problems continued for Fisher Ulliott down the 18th when his second shot to the green was lost in deep gorse leaving the match after 18 holes in Samuels favour by a margin of 7.

The second round began with Fisher Ulliott needing a big change in fortune, but this was not to be. After halving the 1st in par, Samuel went further ahead when he holed out from 8 foot for a birdie three on the second hole. The 3rd and 4th holes were halved in pars, but when Fisher Ulliott bunkered himself at the short par 3 5th, Samuel’s par 3 was good enough to take his advantage to 9 holes with only 12 to play. The 10th and 11th holes saw two poor tee shots from Samuel and when he failed to make par at either hole Fisher Ulliott had managed to reduce the deficit to 7 holes with 7 to play. The dogleg 12th hole was halved with par 4s so this left Jon Samuel the ERUGC Matchplay Champion for 2024 winning by a margin of 7&6.

Jon won his first Matchplay title in 2003 and followed it up the following year when he completed the rare Strokeplay and Matchplay double. Noone had managed it since until today!

Final

Sadly the 2022 final could not be played due to serious injuries suffered by Tommy Risker in a car accident a couple of weeks before the Union’s showpiece end to the season. There were various options looked at by the Committee, none of which were ideal in the exceptional circumstances, so Charlie Milner of Hull Golf Club was awarded the title.

CONGRATULATIONS TO CHARLIE MILNER – 2022 ERUGC MENS MATCHPLAY CHAMPION

Thankfully Tommy has recovered well over the winter, but still has a way to go both on and off the course to get back to his brilliant best.

Semi Finals

  • Charlie Milner beat Robert Draper played at Ganstead Park
  • Tommy Risker beat Luke Thornton played at Bridlington Belvedere

Responsibility for arranging and playing their matches lies with both players.

PLEASE DO NOT DELAY ORGANISING YOUR MATCH.

All matches are to be played and the result sent to the Match-play Secretary at geoffdrewery@btinternet.com by:

Ryan Gray wins 2021 Men’s Matchplay at Ganton!

The East Riding Union of Golf Clubs Match-play Championship final was played at Ganton Golf Club on Sunday 19th September between Ryan Gray (25 years) from Driffield G.C. and Tommy Risker (17 years) from Scarborough South Cliff G.C. Caddying for Ryan was Sam Dillon, good golfer and Driffield member and for Tommy was Chris Smith, himself an outstanding player.

The weather and Ganton course were in perfect conditions when the 36 hole match started at 8-30.

Opening drives from both player missed the fairway, Tommy’s ball finding the left rough and Ryan’s the right. Both players found the green and holed out for a half. It was the 9th before they halved another hole. Ryan dropped a shot at the 2nd to lose the hole but birdied the 3rd to level the match.  Tommy birdied the 4th to regain the lead and went further ahead when Ryan 3 putted at the par 3 fifth hole. The tough 448 yard 6th went in Tommy’s favour, Ryan bunkered his second shot to the green and failed to match Tommy’s par 4. Ryan’s wayward driving cost again at the 7th, from a difficult lie he found more trouble to the right of the green when he had to take a penalty drop and subsequently conceded the hole leaving Tommy 4 up. At this stage things looked ominous for Ryan, Tommy was playing a faultless game with Ryan struggling to find fairways off the tee. However, on the 8th Tommy blocked his drive right into the deep gorse and he had to take a penalty shot which eventually cost him the hole. Both players birdied the 9th making the match in Tommy’s favour by 3 holes. Birdies on the 10th and 11th took Tommy further ahead and after the 12th he had a commanding 5 hole lead.

The 13th hole saw a change in fortune and momentum from Ryan, after hitting two shots with his trusty 2 iron onto the green at this 535 yard hole he then holed his 20 yard putt for an eagle 3. This seemed to un-nerve Tommy and his accuracy off the tee changed, he uncharacteristically blocked drives at 14th and 15th, on both occasions the ball was lost and so the hole reducing his lead to 2 holes. The 16th proved equally troubling when Tommy’s drive hit a tree to the right of the fairway and not seen again, so another concession and his lead down to 1.A bogey 4 for Tommy at the tough par 3 17th saw the match back to all square. Two 4’s from both players on the 18th left the match all square and hanging in the balance.

The second round began with Ryan hitting a magnificent drive well over 300 yards leaving him just a short pitch to the green, Tommy’s opening drive left him some 200 yards from the green but he did manage to recover to achieve a par which Ryan could only match. The 2nd proved to be troublesome for Ryan yet again when his bogey 5 gifted the hole to Tommy. Whilst playing the 3rd the forecasted rain hit, in a very short time the 3rd green was beginning to flood and it was touch and go if play could continue. The deluge did relent and the flooded greens soon cleared.

The heavy rain seemed to affect Tommy more than Ryan when Tommy had to concede the 3rd hole after visiting two bunkers. Both players birdied the 4th and parred the 5th, so all square at this stage. Tommy went ahead at the 6th when Ryan bunkered his shot to the green. By now Ryan had regained confidence with his driver and on the 7th his fairway splitting, 300+ yards drive left him with a short chip to the green, whilst Tommy was trying to recover from a poor drive which found him in the deep rough. The 8th and 9th holes were halved leaving the match all square after 27 holes.

The 10th hole saw Ryan take the lead for the first time in the match when he holed his 20 foot for birdie. Pars for both on the 11th & 12th meant the match was still just one hole in Ryan’s favour. The 13th hole proved again to be pivotal in this match, with both players finding the fairway, Ryan was first to play, his 3 wood shot to the green set off way right towards the deep punishing gorse, Tommy’s shot left him on the fairway some 100 yards short of the green. Ryan’s ball was found and he proceeded to hit magnificent shot to the green leaving him some 25 foot from the pin which he then holed for a birdie, when Tommy failed to hole his birdie attempt Ryan was two up. A bunkered tee shot from Tommy down the long 15th cost him another hole and consequently 3 down and dormy in the match. A half in four down the 16th left Ryan the winner by a margin of 3&2.

The Match-play Championship Salver was presented to Ryan by the East Riding Union President Mr. John Chambers.

Raybould wins Men’s Matchplay on 37th hole

The East Riding Union of Golf Clubs’ Matchplay Championship final was played at the Ganton Golf Club on Sunday 15th September 2019. Conditions were cool with a northerly breeze when the match between East Riding veteran Alan Wright, defending Champion, of Hessle and East Riding’s in-form player Nick Raybould of Hornsea teed off.

Alan took an early lead at the 1st hole with a par 4 when Nick failed to get down in two from the edge of the green. After halving the 2nd Nick levelled the match on the 3rd with a 4 after Alan had driven into one of Ganton’s huge bunkers.  Alan was in more trouble down the 4th and Nick capitalised on this and went one up with a par 4. Both players achieved par three’s at the 5th.On the 6th Nick hit a prodigious, drive well over 300 yards, leaving him only a wedge into this par 5 hole although he pulled his 2nd shot into a green-side bunker he hit a magnificent bunker shot to within 2 foot and record a birdie to take him to 2 up.

Down the 8th Alan got his driving back on track whilst Nick’s drive ended up in deep rough, although Nick hit a great recovery shot, he ended up in a greenside bunker and went on to lose this hole. The 9th saw both players hit long and straight drives, Nick hit a great 5 iron to within 20 foot of the pin but Alan’s response was a magnificent 7 iron to within 2 feet which was conceded for his eagle to return the match to all square after 9 holes.

The par three 169 yard 10th saw Alan’s 9 iron finish 5 foot from the hole but when he failed to hole-out for his birdie the hole was halved.

Alan’s poor drive on the 11th was lost in the deep gorse giving Nick a one-hole advantage. Alan’s woes continued at the 13th when he drove into another of Ganton’s deep fairway bunkers consequently giving Nick a two-hole advantage.

The 15th saw both players hit 300 yard fairway splitting drives but Nick took the advantage hitting a wedge to within 15 foot to record his par whilst Alan 3 putted to go 3 holes behind. On the 16th both players were in the same green-side bunker for two shots, Alan made a great bunker shot and holed his putt for par he reduced the deficit to two holes. So it remained until Nick holed out for birdie at the 18th to give him a 3 shot lead after the first 18 holes.

When Nick birdied the 1st hole of the second round it looked as if the game was all but over but the 2nd hole saw Alan fight back begin when he won the 2nd with a par 4. The 4th hole also went Alan’s way when Nick’s putter badly let him down with him three putting from no more than 6 foot. Nick’s putting touch returned on the 5th when he hold from 10 foot for birdie taking him back to 3 up.

Alan’s fighting spirit then saw him get the game back to all-square over the next three holes when he returned: an eagle, par and birdie over the next three holes. The 9th & 10th saw each of the players securing wins with pars. On the 11th Alan had an enormous piece of luck when his drive hit a rake which prevented the ball going into a deep fairway bunker, taking advantage of this and secured a half in par. On the 12th hole Alan’s luck ran out when he found deep rough with his drive gifting the hole to Nick. The 13th was halved in par then both players struggled at the short 14th hole with Alan’s scrappy bogey 5 winning the hole to make the match all-square again. The 15th saw Alan have more bunker trouble and he had to concede the hole to put Nick back in the driving seat.

After a wayward drive by Alan at the long par 4 – 16th hole the game looked to be heading back to Nick’s favour but a magnificent ‘Ballesteros’ type shot from the trees enabled Alan to secure a par 4 and win the hole when Nick missed a short putt. Back to all-square.

The drama continued. Nick birdied the par four 17th to go 1 up again and when Alan bunkered his second shot on the 18th the game looked to be all over but not to be. Nick had hit the green in two, albeit some 40 foot away, Alan then proceeded to hit his bunker shot to within 10 foot of the pin and then managed to hole out for his par.  When Nick missed an 8 footer to win the game it was all square after 36 holes and so the game went to sudden death.

The 37th hole saw Alan take driver from the tee but his slightly pushed tee shot saw him impeded by one of Ganton’s many gorse bushes. In the meantime Nick had played iron for safety which certainly paid off when he managed to secured his par to win the hole, the match and title East Riding Union of Golf Club’s Match-play Champion for 2019.

At the after match-dinner the President, Mr. Chris Clarkson presented Nick Raybould the Trophy.
