Home player and Head Greenkeeper Dave Jackson rolled back the years to take his first East Riding Senior Championship around his home track.

Dave and the team at Beverley & East Riding had set the course up superbly given the recent drought, but no-one matched the par of 69 around the Westwood, playing very bouncy in a stiff breeze.

Dave’s 71 just snuck him home ahead of some stellar and seasoned senior names. Rees Brown (below top) of Hornsea took the runners-up spot with a 72 on countback from Hessle’s Andy Lockwood (below middle) who took the age 50-59 gross prize.

In the 60-69 bracket, past champion Andy Woodhead (below bottom) was again in the mix with a battling 74. David Stokes of Drax shot 80 to win the over 70s category. Nett prizes were awarded in the age group categories (see below)

Thanks to Ian Jeffrey and Dave Greenwood for running the desk so efficiently and to starters Andy Pittaway and past President Jonty Hall. A big thank you all the staff at Beverley for looking after the desk jockeys and competitors over the course of the day.

Beverley member and 2025 ERUGC President Dave Greenwood presented the prizes.

Top knock from Norton secures Seniors title

Beverley’s Richard Norton lifted the East Riding Senior Championship for the first time after a stunning level par 72 around a tough Scarborough South Cliff layout. A stiff breeze on the cliff top, lightening fast greens and some devilish pin positions meant that scoring was difficult with only one sub 80 score recorded until the final few groups appeared over the home holes.

Richard had to wait until the 5th for his first par, having sandwiched two bogies between birdies at the 1st and 4th. Further birdies at 8 and 9 took him out in 34 and he played steady golf coming home with the only blemishes being a bogey at 12 and a frustrating dropped shot at the last as his rapid par putt slid agonisingly by (pictured below). Richard wondered whether that would prove costly, but he already knew he had beaten two of the leading contenders in playing partners Leigh Gawley (81) and Mark Lamb who finished second overall with his impressive 75.

Other notable scores were from home players Shaun Smith (78) and Jason Jones (79), the Champion’s brother David Norton (79), Hessle’s Phil Scott (79) and ERUGC Men’s Team Captain Andy Lockwood (79).

Smith and Scott took divisions 1 and 2, whilst Beverley’s Rod Shimwell returned to the winner’s enclosure for the umpteenth time in the Senior Championship with another victory in the 70+ age category after an excellent gross 84.

In the nett categories, no-one got near East Riding Secretary John Illingworth’s 69. A birdie at the 9th had the Cave Castle man out in 40 and he shrugged off an ugly 7 at the home hole to card an impressive gross 83 which many single figure players in the field would have happily signed for!

ERUGC Secretary John Illingworth and Competition Secretary Dave Greenwood were pleased with the healthy entry of 70 players despite the rescheduling of the event from its original date in May. Dave thanked Scarborough South Cliff for the presentation of the course and their excellent hospitality throughout the day. A big thanks also to the sterling job done by starter Andy Pittaway and the help on the desk given by President Jonty Hall who later presented the prizes.

East Riding Union of Golf Clubs
Senior Championship

Brough Golf Club
Friday 19th May 2023

Some familiar names were in the frame for the ERUGC’s first individual major championship of the year, but it was a beaming Keith Broadfoot of Hessle Golf Club, making his senior debut, who took home the trophy.

2023 East Riding President Mike Dawson presented the trophy to Keith at a well attended prize-giving.

Keith’s scintillating 69 around a Brough course in immaculate condition given the wet spring got the job done by three strokes from Hull’s Sunil Mukerjea. The expected challenge from the stellar final group of Richard NortonAndy Woodhead and Alan Wright failed to materialised and the latter two had to settle for the gross prizes in their respective age categories with 74s.

The course played long off the back tees and Brough’s punishing rough led to some high scores despite the excellent weather enjoyed by the whole field.

Best gross in the over 70s category went to the evergreen Brian Witty of Scarborough North Cliff with an excellent 78.

Best nett prizes went to Michael Broadley of Beverley in Category A (aged 50-59) with a one under par 67 who pipped Brough’s Jamie Haldenby by a shot.

In Category B (60-69) Geoff Rankin of the Union’s newest member club Drax had the best of the day nett 66, edging out another home player Steve Mews by two.

The neat spread of nett prizes across different clubs was completed in Category C (70+) by Erik Sologub of the KP Club and Bryan Jones of Cave Castle who had 71 and 72 respectively.

ERUGC Secretary John Illingworth and Competition Secretary Dave Greenwood were pleased with the healthy entry of 80 players from across all corners of the district. Dave thanked Brough for the presentation of the course and their excellent hospitality throughout the day. A big thanks also to the sterling job done by starter Andy Pittaway and the help on the desk given by past President Edward Clark.

The next event is the Millennium Championship Final on Sunday 4th June hosted by Withernsea GC.

Entry is now also open for both the East Riding Amateur Championship on 18th June at Cave Castle Golf Club and the East Riding Open Championship at Hornsea Golf Club on 16th July.

Senior Championship

Cave Castle Golf Club
Friday 20th May 2022

An overcast day with a gentle breeze and the threat of showers greeted the 74 participants as they drove into the lovely Cave Castle grounds.

East Riding President, John Illingworth hosted the day at his home course and manned the desk throughout with assistance from his better half, (his own words), Alison.

A maturing and ever improving course, set up in excellent condition, played difficultly throughout the day and the early mark was set by Andy Lockwood (Hessle) who posted a solid 75 (3 over par) in the first group of the day.

This was the only score under 80 posted by the rest of the field until the final few groups when Trevor Loten (Kilnwick Percy) came in with a fine 78 and the 3 players in the final group were left trying to match or better Lockwood’s early target.

The later starters had the worst of the weather with several heavy, but brief, squally showers throughout the afternoon.

Richard Norton (Beverley & ER) equalled the best front 9 of the day with a 1 over par 38 with Alan Wright (Ganstead Park) 39 – 1 shot back.

Andy Woodhead (Hessle), defending champion, playing in the same group was off the pace and it was not to be his day.

A turnaround started on the 10th – which must be one of the toughest par 4’s in the Union and had only seen 2 pars all day.  Alan birdied the hole and Richard bogeyed to exchange places.

Alan extended his lead to 3 when he birdied the 15th and Richard dropped a shot on the 16th. A 3,3 finish saw Norton close the gap, but Alan finished with a back 9 of 34 for a total of 73 to Richard’s 74.

A fine finish to a good day.

Rod Shimwell (Beverley & ER ) in the over 70’s category shot an excellent 81 and Steve Mews (Brough) in the 60-69 category a 84 to win the age group Gross prizes along with Andy Lockwood in the 50-59 age category.

Many players struggled on the tough course but the Net prizes in the various categories were led by Paul West from Kilnwick Percy GC with a best net of the day 67.

Thank you to the Cave Castle GC owner Steve Hoggarth, Club Professional, Steve Mackinder along wth the catering staff and greenkeepers for hosting a great day. There was welcome praise from the players for the course and venue.

Thanks also to our starter Andy Pittaway who as always is a great help on the day.

The next event is the Millennium Championship Final this Saturday 28th May hosted by Sutton Park GC.

Entry is now also open for both the East Riding Amateur Championship on the 19th of June at Beverley & ER and the East Riding Open Championship on the 17th July at Burstwick GC.

Results of the 2021 Senior Championship

After a successful Members’ meeting the previous day at Filey GC, the East Riding Union of Golf Clubs held its Seniors Championship at the Kilnwick Percy Golf Club (KP). For the second day running the weatherman excelled himself, unfortunately the sun of Filey was replaced by an overcast, occasionally rainy but warm morning. Starter Andy Pittaway got the first group of Mark Calvert (Hornsea GC) and Kevin Moor (Brough GC) underway just before 10am. They were followed by 57 other entrants onto a well presented, tough but fair course.

The Union would like to acknowledge the generosity of KP owners Darwin Escapes for their sponsorship, the hospitality of Ashley Pheasant and his team and the obvious hard work of the KP green staff. It is a long time since I have seen penalty areas as well marked as they were at KP. Well done and thanks. It is clear that a substantial investment has been made in the course ~ we will be back.

After cancellation in 2020 due to Covid, returning 2019 Champion, Andy Woodhead (Hessle GC) looked the man to beat although playing partners Mark Lamb (Ganstead Park) and Steve Raybould (Scarborough NC) were clearly contenders. It was also great to see Union Team Manager Andy Lockwood back playing competitive golf after injury alongside the ever talkative Phil Scott (both Hessle GC). They were robbed of playing partner and 2018 Champion Jon Coggin due to a recurring back spasm. Get well soon Jon!

The reality was that Woodhead was always the man to beat. Cruising to the turn in 1 under par 34, with 2 birdies and a bogey he was home in 1 over par 36, with 1 birdie and 2 bogeys for a level par 70.

He finished 3 clear of a delighted Matty Whitehead (Bridlington Links GC) and Sunil Mukerjea (Hull GC) on 73 with Matty edging Sunil on countback. David Robinson (Beverley & ER) and Lamb both on 75 completed the top 5.

In the categories for ages 50 – 59, 60 – 69 and 70+ for best gross, Mukerjea, Chris Stanley (Scarborough NC) 79 and John Riley (Hull GC) 82 took the honours. The best net prizes went to Jonathan Burns (Cave Castle) 88 – 15 = 72, Neil Moor (Brough GC) 88 – 17 = 71 and Ian Scott (Brough GC) 85 – 10 = 75 in each age category respectively.

Next year’s event will be a week later on 20 th May 2022 at Cave Castle.

My thanks go to the people who commit much time in organising these events. For the set-up of the event, Union Competition Secretary, Dave Greenwood did much of the preparation supported by Alan Key, our man at Burstwick.

On the competition desk for the day was Union President Elect Peter Robertson supported by Past Union President Stephen Thornton. Steve had spent the whole of the previous day running the Union event at Filey, a 12 hour shift.

The next Union event is our Members’ meeting at Hornsea GC which is an AmAm. Details of these popular events can be found here.

The Millennium Trophy final is now being held at Burstwick Country Golf on 29th May. Would all clubs get your entrant’s details in to Dave Greenwood as soon as possible please.

Our premier event of the year is The Amateur Championship for the H.W. Collins Trophy and is being held at Scarborough North Cliff on Sunday 20 th June. Entries can be made below.

Results of the 2019 Senior Championship

At 9am sharp East Riding Past President and official starter, Stephen Wright got the championship underway on a bright and breezy day at Hessle GC. The first group out comprised of golf blogger Paul Fowler from Beverley & ER, Richard Callis from Cottingham and ERUGC Secretary John Illingworth. A field in excess of 90 which was once again up on previous years and testament to the work put in by President and Competition Secretary Chris Clarkson.

The serious golfing talent, however, was at the other end of the field. Last out at 14.00 was the marquee 3-ball of ERUGC Past President Andy Woodhead with fellow Hessle member Alan Wright and England Senior International Richard Norton. It was nearly a 2 ball as Wright made it to the tee with seconds to spare after misreading his tee time.

Scoring was challenging resulting in a tight leaderboard at half way. Woodhead was joined on 2 over par by Hessle’s Phil Scott and Ganstead Park’s Pete Curry whilst Norton and Wright were one shot back with Beverley’s Ian Goldie.

Into the back 9 there was all to play for. Scott made the first move with a birdie at 10 but a run of three bogeys from the 15th derailed his challenge as he shot 39. Curry couldn’t spice his game up and fell away with a 6 over 42. Goldie is probably still kicking himself after a bogey, bogey finish for 39 whilst both Norton and Wright took 38 for a total of 77 to tie Scott.

Last man standing though was 55 year old Woodhead who had 9 pars for an incoming 36 and an 18 hole total of 74. In the end a comfortable 3 shot win. It was disappointing that defending champion Jonathan Coggin, who returned his trophy, was unable to defend his title due to injury. He will be back to challenge at The KP Club in 2020.

In the age categories, evergreen John Robinson shot a gross 79 with an eagle on 18. There were many younger men envious of that finish. John Artymiuk dominated the 60 – 69 age category with an impressive net 72 whilst the loquacious Mike James once again played steadily to just miss out on the top net prize in the over 70’s category to Hessle Captain John Britton.

The presentation party consisted of ERUGC President Clarkson and Hessle Captain Britton. Hessle as ever was in excellent condition and Club Secretary Paul Haddon and his team did an outstanding job in making members and visitors alike welcome. COGGIN on the OGGIN for first Seniors Win

On a lovely sunny day, with perfect golfing conditions, former East Riding stalwart and home favourite Jonathan Coggin won the ERUGC Seniors Championship for the first time with a commendable score of 3 over par 73.

This year the East Riding Union of Golf Clubs made one or two changes for most of our events to try and increase the number of entrants. Last years Seniors Competition at Flamborough only produced 47 entries of which only 40 played on the day. In 2018 at Hull GC the main difference was to reduce the senior qualification age down from 55 to 50, and this along with the more central location of the event, enabled a field of nearly 90 players from a potential 94 entrants.

The runners up for the Championship were Richard Norton from Beverley, who plays off a scratch handicap but losing out on the back 9 to Eddie Loyden of Boothferry playing off 6 – both carded 75 and therefor Eddie taking the Category A title (age 50-59) this was a sterling effort by Eddie as he started with a 7 on the first!

The nett prizes for category A went to Graham Fisher (1st) from Hull GC and Freer Boddy (2nd) from Cave Castle GC

In Category B (60-69) Ian Stephenson, last years winner, won the Best Gross with 78, with Paul Rutterford,of Hessle GC and Andrew McAlpine from Hull GC winning 1st and 2nd Nett respectively

In Category C (70+) another former winner, of the Championship, Brian Witty won this with a very respectable 79 . (breaking 80 off back tees for a 75 year old is amazing ?!!) followed by nett prizes in this category from Mike Jones (1st) of Hull GC and Peter Blenkinsop (2nd) of Cottingham, completing the prize winners

At the Presentation Jonathon Coggin thanked the organisers etc and also mentioned that it was also great to win the Trophy that his father Brian Coggin had previously won 26 years ago in 1992.

Congratulations to Jonathan Coggin and all the other prize winners.
